The potential of quantum technologies has been something of interest to the United Kingdom (UK) government for some time as quantum technologies could be source of global competitive advantage driving economic growth and employment in a new area of skilled work.
The need for a quantum strategy was set out by them Conservative government in March 2023 by the newly formed Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) (formed 7th February 2023) called the National Quantum Strategy. This strategy at the time was part of the five priority technologies of tomorrow under the UK Science and Technology Framework (now replaced by the current Labour government framework that has “10 critical levers”*:
- Quantum
- Artificial Intelligence
- Engineering Biology
- Semiconductors
- Future telecoms
This strategy followed on from the 2014 National Quantum Technologies Programme (NQTP) which was a “£1 billion dynamic collaboration between industry, academia and government”.
